Last academic year we celebrated Mayfield’s 50th Birthday. \u00a0In true Mayfield style we made the most of the chance to celebrate!<\/p>\n

We commissioned this beautiful stained glass window from local stained glass artist Claire Sinclair. \u00a0Claire used design ideas by pupils Laurie Taylor and John Baker. \u00a0 Claire brought lots of glass samples into school and explained to some pupils how a stained glass window progresses from design idea to beautiful masterpiece. \u00a0The window is in a corridor near the courtyard and throws lovely colourful light patterns – do come and admire it if you have chance.<\/p>\n

We were also lucky enough to have a giant kangaroo sculpture made for us by Tony Hillier, a retired academic who makes sculptures from scrap metal\u00a0which he donates free to local public bodies. We asked Tony to make us a sculpture to celebrate Mayfield\u2019s\u00a050th anniversary and after some discussion we agreed on a kangaroo with joeys to represent nurturing and\u00a0leaping forwards. In reference to our Hearing Support Centre one of the small kangaroos has a cochlear\u00a0implant. Tony\u2019s garden (on the road between Histon and Cottenham) is full of his sculptures and he\u00a0welcomes visitors \u2013 more information is at his website www.hilliersculpture.co.uk<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2018Kanga\u2019 was delivered to the front of the school as that was the easiest place to unload her from the truck. \u00a0Once she was here we realised she would fit through the school to be put into the courtyard as we had originally planned. We hope that in the courtyard she will be more visible to the children and become part of \u00a0the school community.<\/p>\n

To celebrate the year we produced a lovely book featuring 50 people who have been associated with Mayfield over the past 50 years – more details are here\u00a0Mayfield 50th Anniversary Book<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

We completed our celebrations by hosting an open day in July. \u00a0Former staff, parents, pupils and governors were served cream teas in the community room, viewed artefacts from the school’s past in the hall and toured the school.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
