The Nightmare Bedroom

Joe was in bed. His bedroom was cold and dark. He couldn’t sleep. He opened his eyes and looked around.  He could hear an unfamiliar noise above his head. It sounded like scrabbling. It was getting louder. It sounded like something was going to come through the ceiling. Joe grabbed his teddy and held it over his eyes. “It’s just rats in the loft.” he said to himself, but it didn’t make him feel any better.

His green and red bedroom door started creaking like it was going to fall off its hinges. Then, his clothes basket started to shake. Joe was sure there was something in there. It suddenly stopped. But then one of the posters on his wall suddenly floated off his wall like a feather. Then his clothes basket shook again and something did jump out. It had yellow eyes and walked on all fours. It slunk quickly underneath the bed and disappeared.

Joe was terrified, so he crawled underneath the covers and sobbed. He could still hear the basket creaking. Then there was another thud and a scratching noise against the door. Come upstairs quickly!” But he could not hear the safety of his parents’ footsteps. He was alone in this nightmare. All the noises he had heard previously had started up again, rising up in a crescendo.

Joe tried putting his pillow over his head and shutting his eyes tightly. But it didn’t help. He was going to have to do something. Very slowly, like a tortoise he climbed out of bed and crept over to the window.  He looked out.  all he could see in his garden were the usual footballs and trees. He turned back to face his room. There was still something by the door.  Joe was shaking with fear.  He took a deep breath and raised his teddy bear. Joe carefully took aim, and threw the bear with all his might. It made contact.  The creature yowled and shot under the bed, to join what Joe now realised must be his other cat. Joe was giddy with relief and switched on his light and opened his bedroom door. Relief turned to surprise and then to horror when he saw his two cats asleep in their bed …
